It is May of 1586. Jost is in England, his family having lost titles and lands in the religious
conflicts in Germany prior to the so-called "Peace of Augsburg". He has attached himself to the train of Sir Philip Sidney, for whom he performs
a wide range of duties. Sir Philip and his followers (Jost among them as a gentleman of the company) are currently preparing to go to the Low Countries,
Sir Philip having been made Governor of Flushing.
