HRM Luna Athanwolf:

I am Duchess Luna Athanwulf, Lady of the Rose, Mistress of the Pelican, Member of the Order of the Silver Crescent and holder of three Queens’ Cyphers. I have been fortunate enough to be Queen of These Eastern Lands three times, during one of which I was Victorious Queen of Pennsic XXIX.

I have been in the SCA for 20 years now. Yikes! I was 3.5 yrs when I joined. No, really! My persona and name are 9th century Viking, but I have since morphed into a 15th century (1402 to be exact) German Duchess with a predilection for French fashions. As my beloved Duke Balfar Von Grunwald has won a variety of wars and acclaim, both Eastern and foreign, I am rich enough to be able to indulge my tastes and frequently travel about Europe with my entourage.

I love learning and have a horrendous tendency to learn something, get the hang of it and move on to the next thing. Some friends have pointed out that I have the attention span of a very young Border Collie. (Look something shiny!)

I have autocrated, been Baronial MOL, EK MOL, ran Janas’ Queen's tea and re-painted the Royal pavilion. I occasionally shoot archery, have fenced briefly and tried dancing even more briefly. I make lampwork beads, brew cordials, enjoy painting arms on shields, dip candles, make soap, write occasional newsletter articles, have banished three people, make felt and do a variety of embroidery, beading and hand stitching. I am currently learning to make 15th century coathardies with my 11 year old daughter, Tanya and hope to learn to make gloves next.

Sheep fear me. I’ve only sheared once and I’m not good at it, but I can take their wool, clean it, comb it, spin it (both spindle and wheel), ply it and weave it into cloth and dye it

Novasi taught me Mendi years ago and I’ve been practicing it since, particularly 15th century Persian and Moroccan. I have catered vigils with everything from period (1605) candied rose petals to a model of the EK gates out of Rice Krispy treats.

Sir Mitchel MacBain passed the Betting Guide to me during Bjorn & Morgans’ reign and I have produced it since. Okay, I’ve missed three Crowns, two because I received the combatants list with less than 78 hours before the event and one as it was mine (and I’m a doof).

I developed an interest in and intense admiration of scrolls while Royalty. Getting to sign the huge variety of scrolls that memorialize your words while ‘The Hat’ leaves an indelible impression. It also is very intimidating. The sheer skill and beauty that you see makes it hard to believe mere mortals could attempt such lovely writs.

Compliments on my Mendi and the re-painting of the Royal Pavilion encouraged me enough to try my hand at scrolls. After my first two efforts received Michals’ approval, I took on my first scroll assignment. I am proud to announce my first scroll, a QOC, was handed out by HRM Isabella at K&Q’s Fencing Champions.
